A knife attacker has been shot outside parliament after charging the gates in a car and attacking officers, in what police are treating as a terror incident.

Witnesses say a car mowed down a number of pedestrians before crashing into the gates outside Portcullis House.

A police officer has reportedly been stabbed. The officer's condition is not known.

The alleged assailant was allegedly shot by armed police.
